Magic
by Sarah Karowski
I remember I was stuck in Orlando with friends. One’s car had died, another’s was too weak for a jump. We were taking turns playing mechanics when someone brought out the little girl they were babysitting to see the commotion. She was maybe five years old, & offered—bravely, matter-of-factly—that we all dance around our failures while we chant: Work! Work! Work!
& of course, we did. It was magic; eight adults indulging a child’s ingenuity.
The car jumped.
